The Rainy Day Charm: Why Kamikochi is Truly Beautiful in the Rain

【Kamikochi Column Vol. 3】

Hello from Keiryuso Siorie.

"It’s forecast to rain tomorrow. Can we still enjoy Kamikochi?"

This is a question we frequently receive from our guests, especially during the rainy season.

Of course, Kamikochi on a clear, sunny day is absolutely wonderful. However, there are actually many unique charms that can only be truly appreciated on a rainy day.

■ No Need to Force Yourself to Walk Far on Rainy Days

Just because it is raining does not mean you need to hike long distances.

You can fully enjoy the area just around the Kamikochi Bus Terminal, Kappa Bridge, and the nearby Konashidaira. In fact, taking it slow and spending a relaxing time is probably the perfect way to enjoy a rainy day here.

■ Compare the Difference Between the Azusa and Shimizu Rivers

When it rains, the Azusa River can sometimes become a bit muddy due to the water flowing down from the mountains.

On the other hand, the Shimizu River, which is fed by pure underground spring water, remains incredibly clear and transparent even on the heaviest rainy days. It is fascinating to see how two rivers right next to each other in Kamikochi can show such completely different faces. Experiencing this wonder of nature is a special treat reserved only for rainy days.

■ Discover Kamikochi at the Visitor Center

If the rain gets a bit too strong, head over to the Kamikochi Visitor Center.

Inside, there are wonderful exhibitions about Kamikochi’s nature, wildlife, and history. Even just looking through the beautiful photographs is highly enjoyable. You might find yourself thinking, "I want to visit this spot next time!" and making new discoveries.

■ Plant Life That Shines Brightest in the Rain

This is the best part! Personally, I believe the most interesting thing about Kamikochi on a rainy day is the plant life.

The way bamboo grass leaves repel water droplets, and how the trees look so vibrant and glistening as they soak up the rain. Plants that you might normally walk right past without noticing show completely different expressions on a wet day.

How do trees absorb moisture and live? Walking while pondering these thoughts will make you feel even closer to the grand nature of Kamikochi.

■ A Luxurious Moment at the Gosenjaku Hotel

We also highly recommend enjoying some cake and coffee at the Gosenjaku Hotel while listening to the soothing sound of the rain. Of course, a cold beer is perfectly fine too!

The greenery outside the window looks exceptionally vivid when wet, creating a calm, cozy atmosphere that is entirely different from a sunny day. It’s a wonderful, slightly luxurious treat that you can only indulge in while traveling.

■ Head Back to Sawando for a Day-Trip Hot Spring

If you decide, "Let's just have a relaxing day today," heading back to the Sawando Onsen area for a day-trip hot spring is another fantastic option.

Recommended Day-Trip Hot Springs!

We highly recommend "Azusa Kohan no Yu," where you can soak in the hot springs while gazing out at the Azusa River. Believe it or not, the rougher and muddier the river torrents get, the more spectacular and dramatic the view becomes!

■ Recommendations from a Local Ryokan

A rainy day in Kamikochi is by no means a "disappointing day."

It holds a unique serenity and a moist, lush beauty completely different from sunny days. We hope you will pause your steps a little and enjoy the sights of Kamikochi that can only be seen when it rains.
