What is the Best Time to Visit Kamikochi? | Keiryuso Shiorie

【Kamikochi Column Vol. 4】

What is the Best Time to Visit Kamikochi?

Hello, this is Keiryuso Shiorie.

“What time do you recommend going to Kamikochi?” This is one of the most common questions we receive from our guests.

While we would love to simply say, "First thing in the morning!", the reality is a bit more nuanced.

■ Early Morning: Quiet, Serene, and Beautiful

In the early morning, the air in Kamikochi is crisp, the crowds are thin, and it feels incredibly refreshing. On a clear day, you can catch a stunning, unobstructed view of the Hotaka Mountain Range.

However, early morning is also when hikers and climbers flock to the mountains all at once. Depending on the season and the weather, the buses and taxis departing from Sawando can become extremely crowded. In fact, over the past few years, the longest recorded wait time for a bus from Sawando was a staggering 3-hour wait for those lining up before 5:00 AM!

■ Midday: The Classic, Vibrant Kamikochi Atmosphere

Around noon, the area around the iconic Kappa Bridge comes alive with many travelers. Shops and restaurants are fully open, making it the most convenient and worry-free time for first-time visitors to enjoy a leisurely stroll. The energetic buzz of midday is also a charming part of the Kamikochi experience.

■ Evening: A Hidden Gem (Highly Recommended)

Personally, I love Kamikochi in the late afternoon and evening. As day-trippers begin to head home, a peaceful quiet returns to Kappa Bridge. You can experience a completely different, calm atmosphere and take in the scenery at your own pace.

Note for High Season: Unlike the morning departure from Sawando, the return trip from Kamikochi to Sawando can see massive bottlenecks in the evening. Since everyone who arrived at different times tries to leave at once, the afternoon/evening bus lines can get very long—especially during Obon (mid-August) and three-day weekends. Please allow plenty of extra time.

■ The Most Important Factor of All

Ultimately, the best time to visit Kamikochi is whenever the weather is clear so you can witness the majestic views of the Northern Alps. While we shared the charms of a rainy day in our previous column, if this is your very first time, choosing a day based on a better weather forecast—such as "tomorrow looks clearer than today"—is far more important than worrying about the exact hour.

It is always best to be flexible. If you see it’s too crowded, consider shifting your schedule slightly to enjoy the day without stress. And if the forecast said rain but it suddenly clears up? That is the absolute best time to go!

■ A Final Tip

The key to fully enjoying Kamikochi is to give yourself plenty of time.

This is where staying at Sawando Onsen—the gateway to Kamikochi—becomes a huge advantage. You can adjust your plans dynamically based on the morning weather and crowd conditions. At our inn, we are always happy to provide real-time updates and tailor-made advice for your walk, so please feel free to ask us during your stay!
