Sawando is the essential gateway for travelers heading to the breathtaking sights of Kamikochi. During peak travel seasons, it attracts many visitors, but traffic and bus line congestion actually follow very predictable patterns throughout the day.

Here are some insider tips on how to avoid the crowds and enjoy a seamless journey to Kamikochi when staying with us at Keiryuso Siorie.

1. Peak Rush: The Very First First-Departure Buses

Many travelers believe that arriving as early as possible is the best way to beat the crowds. As a result, the longest lines for buses and taxis occur right at the first morning departure.

In addition to early-morning mountain climbers, more tourists are aiming for the very first bus after checking traffic conditions online, resulting in surprisingly long wait times at dawn.

2. What to Keep in Mind for Early Mornings in Kamikochi

If you arrive at Kamikochi extremely early, please note that shops and restaurants around the iconic Kappa Bridge area are usually not open yet. If you plan to buy breakfast or snacks upon arrival, you may find yourself waiting outside for shops to open.

3. The Smart Choice: Departing After 8:00 AM

For our guests, we recommend enjoying a relaxed breakfast at our ryokan and departing shortly after 8:00 AM.

By departing after 8:00 AM, the initial dawn rush at the bus terminal has settled down. Since our ryokan is within walking distance to the Sawando Bus Terminal, you can leave your car parked safely at our ryokan without worrying about parking queues. When you arrive in Kamikochi, shops and cafes around Kappa Bridge will be open and ready to welcome you.

4. Staying With Us After Visiting Kamikochi on Day 1

If you choose to visit Kamikochi on your arrival day before checking in, staying overnight in Sawando offers another great advantage for Day 2.

Instead of rushing, you can spend a peaceful morning relaxing at the ryokan. This leaves your second day completely open to explore neighboring destinations like Matsumoto, Takayama, or the scenic Norikura Highlands at your leisure.

5. Watch Out for the Afternoon Return Rush (3:00 PM – 4:00 PM)

When heading back from Kamikochi, keep in mind that bus queues at Kamikochi Bus Terminal peak between 3:00 PM and 4:00 PM (and sometimes even earlier on busy days) as hikers head down at the same time. Planning your return slightly earlier or later will save you from standing in long lines.

6. Check Real-Time Parking & Congestion Cameras

The Sawando area provides real-time parking availability guides and live cameras.

If you are planning a trip during peak seasons like summer holidays or autumn foliage, be sure to check the live updates to plan a perfectly smooth itinerary.

We hope these tips help you enjoy a stress-free and memorable visit to Kamikochi and the Japanese Alps!
